Chasing Health

I became acquainted with Health's music through association with Crystal Castles, a music obsession of mine for awhile now, and I went to the El Rey a while back ago to watch their show and unfortunately didn't show up in time (but did see an amazing performance called Ultimate Reality by Dan Deacon).

Then I found out through my friend Ale at the Dublab that they were recording a music video for Health in Silverlake last weekend, so I rolled in to Materials and Applications - again too late and Health was gone, all I saw was some cool footage....darn! Apparently it doesn't pay to be fashionably late. But tonight, I'm crossing my fingers that the third time's the charm, and I will enter the world of Health groupie-dom, by going to see a show they are doing at the uber-cool Pehrspace Gallery in Little Filipinotown. $5, BYOB. Hope to see you (and Health) there...

LACMA Late Night Re-cap

The place was unbelievably crowded. Totally insane lines going that passed the walls of LACMA. Fortunately we got in unscathed with the help of a friend, and saw the Dan Flavin show where security guards were going crazy trying to get people to stop taking pictures with their cameras and camera phones. It's nice to see a museum filled with so much energy, creating a scene for young people to experience art, but do they understand how to make the space interactive without sacrificing the integrity of the spaces? That may need to take a little more re-thinking.

DJ Steve Aoki was in a really strange club space called the "Ultra Lounge" that looked like some underground party in Seattle. Wish I could have seen him outside or in a space that felt less static, lighting that homaged Flavin in a more interactive way - throughout the space rather than just as a backdrop for a stage.

We saw some gothic circus performers from Lucent Dossier...it would have been cooler if they actually had gothic circus guests, and the performances felt less like I was on 3rd Street Promenade.

The heads on a stick for the Hairspray preview were a lot of fun, especially when we walked through the Nineteenth century art and placed them over paintings and sculptures...no security bothering us up there...in fact, we smelled someone smoking weed in the galleries.

Hit + Run crew were silkscreening on site. I met them at the Live Large exhibit a few months back. Their art wasn't as interesting as that show, the blank t-shirts were twice the price at $24, and whoever thought that the experienceartLACMA helvetica text was a good idea for silkscreening was wrong. A guest's comment: "They should pay ME to put that on a shirt" brought on laughter and nodding heads.

Well, it was a big party, that's for sure. And there was more than enough there to fill four hours of time...but when ISN'T that the case at LACMA?

More unauthorized pictures taken by myself and photographer Erik Lang can be seen in this slideshow.

The Peace Project - MCArt Denver

classic pic of Elvis at the Volcom ASR tradeshow booth, Jan. 2007

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver has commissioned Miami-based artist team Rosario Marquardt & Roberto Behar to create a large-scale installation around the idea of peace for new Temporary Contemporary space opening on March 30, 2007.

Here's an excerpt from an NYFA interview of the artists:

Do you have any advice for emerging artists?

RM: You are inventing yourself as you go. RB: Yes, and I would say, too, that it's crucial to think of the work itself more than one's career. A career is something defined by other people. Instead, your work represents a reflection of the process of self-discovery--which can take years, and isn't dependent upon external recognition of what one does. In fact, success can fly away very quickly. RM: Yes, but if one is actively exploring the possibility of what one can be, then the invention of oneself and the discovery of one's work run parallel to each other. RB: This is not meant to be an act of ego, or a pretentious act, rather a process of discovery that mirrors the sort of transformative processes of cities and of history.

Now THIS is balloon art:

Scion had artists make balloons and floated them down with artist-designed cars and monster trucks and 150 volunteers down the beach...it got them front page in The Art News that was handed out to all attendees at the major art fair the next day.

A nice photo journal (where I got the above picture from) can be found at Juxtapoz magazine.

Wooster on Spring - Street Art to be "Time Capsuled"

artwork by Lister

The Wooster Collective was given free reign over the outside and inside of 11 Spring Street in lower Manhattan before the building owners renovate (and probably re-sell the place over market value). Over four floors are covered with street art from numerous graffiti artists, and will be open for viewing this weekend from 11a - 5p.m. More pictures can be found here and here. The picture below is of the outside, which features a terrorist alert meter. Cheeky.

Balloon Art

I've been totally scared of balloon art since I was 12 and ran into an angry clown in Dallas, but this looks fun!

However, the balloon art as a profession still kind of irks me, as this artist is somewhere in Eastern Europe and has 180 more pictures on the website...proudly boasting:

"A lot of other photo You may found THERE!!!"
